Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, which means we'll have to keep the spring jackets tucked away a little longer!
As winter transitions into spring, flooding becomes a major weather hazard. Snowmelt, ice jams, and heavy rain can all contribute to rising water levels.
How Snowmelt Causes Flooding:
When temperatures rise, melting snow releases large amounts of water. If the ground is still frozen, it can't absorb the water fast enough, causing runoff into rivers, lakes, and streams - sometimes leading to flash flooding.
Tips to Help Prevent Snowmelt Flooding in Your Home or Business:
- Keep gutters and downspouts clear of debris.
- Shovel snow away from your foundation, especially near window wells and basement walls.
- Use downspout extensions to direct water away from your property.
- Ensure storm drains are free of obstructions.
- Dig channels to help guide meltwater toward proper drainage areas.
- Install a sump pump - or check that yours is working - to help manage groundwater levels.
- Remove large snow accumulations from your roof to prevent excessive meltwater at once.
